Window 7 is here now! Today – 22 OCT 2009. I still not in the mood to upgrade it yet! Just hang on till I buy my new notebook …
Not much buzz over Windows 7 Four shops which decided to take pre-orders said they had not received a single one. Thu, Oct 22, 2009 my paper MICROSOFT’S new operating system, Windows 7 – which will be launched here today – appears to be facing lacklustre response. Four shops which decided to take pre-orders told my paper yesterday that they had not received a single one. These four shops and four others that my paper spoke to yesterday also saw much fewer enquiries – 20 to 50 in the past week – compared to the hundreds they received before the launch of an earlier Microsoft operating system, Windows XP. Customers are probably taking a wait-and-see approach because of bad experiences with Windows 7’s predecessor, Vista, the shops said. However, senior director of Microsoft Singapore’s business and marketing organisation, Mr Haresh Khoobchandani, said he is confident that Windows 7 will appeal to consumers because it “has already received very positive reviews from users who have tried it”. IT retail chain Challenger Technologies expects “stellar first-day sales”, said chief executive Loo Leong Thye. At a midnight launch yesterday, it offered the home premium upgrade version to 177 members at $77 each, instead of $219. “We expect Windows 7 to sell faster than Windows XP or Windows Vista during the first three months,” Mr Loo said.

Google introduces new commenting tool ‘Sidewiki’ Narrow pop-up browser panel allows notes and comments to be posted alongside Web pages. -AFP Thu, Sep 24, 2009 AFP WASHINGTON, US – Google unveiled a new tool on Wednesday which allows notes and comments to be posted alongside Web pages for others to read. ‘Google Sidewiki’ appears as a narrow pop-up browser panel on the left hand side of a website and displays messages from users about the content of the page. The messages are visible to other users of Sidewiki who visit the site and they can post their own comments, but they cannot edit the comments of others. A website about museums in New York city, for example, would have a Sidewiki panel featuring relevant notes and comments from other visitors. Google, in a blog post, said Sidewiki was a way for Web users to contribute ‘insights’ and ‘helpful information’ next to any Web page. The Internet search and advertising giant said it had developed an algorithm to ensure that the ‘most useful, high-quality entries’ are displayed at the top of a Sidewiki panel. Sidewiki is a feature of Google Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers and Google said it will be available soon for Google Chrome, its own Web browser. Google Sidewiki is similar to other services launched in the past and it met with mixed reviews from technology bloggers. Ars Technica said Sidewiki was ‘intriguing’ but ‘it’s unclear if the service will really deliver a lot of value’ and it could end up being ‘little more than a glorified comment system.’ PaidContent.org said Sidewiki ‘may anger some online publishers who have commenting systems of their own that they’d prefer visitors continue to use.’ A blogger for TechCrunch said he does not have high hopes for Sidewiki. ‘Marking up the Web has limited appeal to the average consumer,’ he wrote.
It was reported in the news paper that there were more sales at Comex despite fewer visitors. I am not surprised with the report because Leman Brothers nightmare is exactly one year (Sep 2009). People spent on gadgets that attract them such as newer laptop, mobilephone, digital camera etc.
SALES at this year’s Comex show have exceeded last year’s, despite fewer visitors. The four-day annual information-technology and consumer-electronics fair at Suntec Singapore, which ended yesterday, raked in $63 million, $7 million more than last year’s sales figure. But the turnout dropped by 25,000 visitors to 710,000 this year.
From 10 Sep 2009 to 13 Sep 2009, Comex 2009 will be held @ Suntec. Asia One offer a online guide here.

A global survey has found that most people can’t live without their mobiles, never leave home without them and, if given a choice, would rather lose their wallet.
Are you one of those that can’t live without mobile phone ? I am confess that I am one of them, I own more than one mobile phone. To be exact, one of them is smartphone with features of internet access, mp3, games, movies etc.
Three-quarters of the more than 8,000 respondents polled online in 11 countries said they take their phone with them everywhere, with Russians and Singaporeans the most attached. More than a third also said they couldn’t live without their phone, topped by Taiwanese and again Singaporeans, while one in four would find it harder to replace the mobile than their purse.

Microsoft had just announced that smartphone running the next version of Windows Mobile will hit store shelves worldwide on Oct. 6.
Windows Mobile 6.5 includes a new version of its Internet Explorer browser for phones, and changes that make it easier to use on touch-screen devices. Microsoft also has developed a free service called My Phone that lets people synchronize text messages, contacts, photos and other phone data on the Internet, where it can be edited or transferred to a new phone.
Microsoft is also launching a mobile application store similar to Apple’s store for iPhone apps on iTunes.
Microsoft is betting the updated smart phone system will lure more consumers .
It is a piece of good news for me. Finally, SPEEDS for the free Wireless@SG service will be doubled to 1 Mbps from 512 kbps across all hotspots around the island from Tuesday 1 Sep 2009.
I almost give up on Wirless@SG because it is super slow and almost unusable.
A total of 1.3 million subscribers stand to benefit from this speed increase at popular places such as cafes, libraries and shopping malls till 2013. First announced in June during imbX 2009 by Acting Minister of Information, Communications and the Arts RADM(NS) Lui Tuck Yew, this enhancement will enable Wireless@SG users to better access media-rich and interactive websites as well as make use of bandwidth-intensive services such as video streaming, video conferencing and multimedia applications.
Nokia, the world’sl argest mobile phone manufacturer, announced on Monday it would launch its first-ever mini laptop.
It will use Microsoft’s Windows operating system and have a battery life of up to 12 hours, the company added.

Nokia said it would announce the price and availability of its new pocket computer in September.
OMNIA II is finally on sales at all telco. namely SingTel, Starhub and M1.
SingTel offer S$398 with 2 year contract.
M1 offer S$598, I am not sure if there is a contract.
Starhub offer S$298 together with 2 year contract.
I guess from looking at the surface, Starhub offer is more attractive.
It is a suprise to the telco industry when Starhub announced the retirement of chief executive Terry Clontz at the same time naming Ex-M1 CEO Mr Neil Montefiroe, 56, as succesor.
